What is the mission of OroraTech?
OroraTech’s vision is “NewSpace intelligence for a sustainable Earth – Driven by integrity and passion”. The global problem of wildfires and their impact on climate change led to OroraTech’s current mission: to develop a global, fast, and reliable wildfire detection and monitoring service from space.

What does OroraTech offer?
To address the growing problem of wildfires around the globe, OroraTech is developing the first global wildfire detection and monitoring service from space. For that purpose, the company integrates data from a large number of existing satellites, which are analysed and visualized in an intuitive All-in-One platform called Wildfire System (WFS) with near real-time fire and satellite imagery visualization.

What is the Space Tech behind it?
OroraTech provides users with downstream services by aggregating and analyzing data from satellites from the ESA, NASA, and NOAA. Currently, this involves six LEO satellites with high resolution and six GEO satellites with low latency provide data for the WFS. Parallelly, the company is developing and launching a constellation of CubeSats with on-board data processing in a 600km orbit. OroraTech’s technical know-how is primarily based on CubeSat Technology, focusing on CubeSat frameworks, thermal imaging, and on-orbit AI-assisted image analysis. OroraTech’s innovation combines technological advances in multiple disciplines, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), New Space, Electronics Miniaturization, (Cloud-based) Big Data Analytics, and Internet of Things (IoT).

What are the applications?
Late detection of remote wildfires heavily contributes to global warming as they emit tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere. Fast wildfire detection and effective fire management based on real-time, accurate data brings tremendous environmental positive effects. The holistic wildfire detection and monitoring service revolutionizes wildfire management and hence addresses various markets, such as governmental agencies, forestry, firefighting brigades, and insurances.

How is OroraTech supporting the UN SDGs?
OroraTech’s WFS contributes to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), especially to the SDG 15 Life on Land (Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss) and to the SDG 13 Climate Action (Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts). OroraTech’s innovative solution has a positive impact on especially two key aspects:

  • GHGs reduction: 20% (>8 billion tonnes) of CO2 in the atmosphere is attributed to wildfires. Early detection and hence early suppression of wildfires could significantly reduce the generation of atmospheric CO2 and thus decelerate global warming. OroraTech’s solution could contribute to reducing the CO2 output of wildfires by 3% (~111.3 million tons/year) until 2030 if adopted by users worldwide.
  • Climate change adaptation: In addition to fighting wildfire effects, OroraTech will provide useful data to analyse climate change by measuring the land and sea surface temperature of the whole planet several times per hour. The EC Copernicus program has shown great interest to integrate this data with existing applications in this area.
